There are so many articles that claim to be about the “benefits of a financial planner”, but sadly they only list out technical features – better investment returns, tax planning, estate planning review etc. Maybe those features are enticing, but I think people want to know more. Let’s discuss the actual benefits you realize when you work with a real financial planner.
One less item on your to do list
With a financial planner you are transferring a “to do” from your list to theirs. It’s now their job to review your employee benefits package. It’s their task to look at your quarterly investments and make sure they are in line with original estimates. They review your insurance policies annually. If you are busy you know how great it feels to have someone else taking care of these to dos for you. Of course you will remain engaged in the process, but the repetitive tasks are off your plate.
Lose the feeling of dread and overwhelm
Almost every person I work with comes in and tells me about a financial mistake they have made. Then they wonder if they will ever be able to retire. Once you work with a financial planner they will give you an understanding of where you are today and what you need to do to reach your goals. No more feeling overwhelmed when you think about those big goals. You’ll know if they are realistic and have a plan of how to achieve them.
Most of us have been in a situation where we wanted a second opinion on something we were considering. Should I take this job in another state? Should I move in with this cute, but permanently unemployed guy (always no!)? Do I really need to have this wart removed? A financial planner is a second opinion on your financial decisions. You won’t be forced to pick your 401(k) investments solo or decide the best approach for using your bonus alone. A planner can help you talk through these decisions in light of your total financial picture.
Often this is my client’s favorite benefit. A financial planner will put together all of the pieces of your financial life. They will review them to make sure they are all working well together. You’ll finally know where everything is and have a clear picture of your finances.
Sleep well at night
This is a culmination of all of these benefits. When your money is organized, your not overwhelmed with to dos, you have a financial action plan and a second opinion when you need it, you worry a whole lot less about money. A major benefit of that lack of worry is much better sleep. I love when clients tell me they are sleeping well at night now that we are working together. That is when I know our work together is giving them what we are all looking for in life – peace of mind!
